Yamaha World Adventure Route: North Route (Atacama Desert, the Andes and Argentina)

After arriving at Santiago de Chile International airport, we transfer you to the hotel in Vina del Mar, one of the most beautiful cities in Chile, overlooking the ocean.

On our first riding day, from Vina del Mar, we travel to Ovalle along the Chilean coastline on the Ruta de Los Tunnels, an easy dirt road immersed in hills of reddish earth. This is where we start to see the first Cacti, typical of the South American desert.

We travel the Antakari Route which follows the traces of the journeys made by indigenous communities in the mid-15th
century through the cities of Vicuña, Andacollo and Río Hurtado, at the height of the Coquimbo Region

The route heading North is close to the ocean, with it's warm climate and beautiful sea breeze. We will cross the Lanos de Challe National Park showcasing it's wonderful white sandy beaches. We journey through the beautiful Ruta del Desierto Costiero and arrive in stunning Bahia Inglesa.

The route crosses the beautiful Pan de Azucar National Park along a fast dirt road going up to the ocean edge. The name of the park came about due to a very fine salt powder that looks like icing sugar. During the day, before arriving in Antofagasta, we experience the Atacama Desert and visit the famous Hand of the Desert, a south-after destination for travelers from all over the world. Our destination that evening is Antofagasta, a beautiful tourist city overlooking the ocean.

Departing for San Pedro de Atacama, the route continues through the breathtaking Atacama Desert, with it's interesting colours and infinite spaces. Venturing off the main route we cross varying terrain along beaten tracks in the middle of dunes and salt flats.

Leaving San Pedro and the desert behind us, we ascend a beautiful road to an altitude of 4800 meters above sea level. The route skirts salt flats, and crosses vast landscapes. We marvel at the captivating Licancabur Volcano, at a height of 5920 metres. The journey takes us through Jama Pass before arrival in Purmamarca.

From the arid desert to the lush greenery of northern Argentina, we experience the legendary Route 40, through ever-changing landscapes of hills, mountains, colours and vegetation. We arrive in the wine-producing location of Mendoza, also known for it's cleanliness, beautiful people and excellent cuisine, including the delectable “bife de chorizo”.

As the adventure comes to an end, we begin our climb into the Andes to travel the beautiful Libertadores Pass, known as the Caracoles or the Stelvio of the Andes. Once we reach the top, before returning to Chile, we deviate to the left and hug the side of the Acongaua, before ascending to Cristo Redentor. The landscape ahead will take your breath away.

We return to Vina del Mar in the evening, and reflect on our exciting adventure!
